"Generational Black Power" by Nikki Brooks

from $44.00

I was a part of the BLM Protest last year in D.C. this was such an empowering photograph to take because in a time where black men are being deemed 'invisible' to their family here is a moment in which the patriarchal figure in the photo is positioned as the loving leader, and teacher of equity to the future (the children in the picture). Another stunning part of this piece was the young black girl at the front. I couldn't help but think of how the trauma of black girls and women have been quietly swept, like Breonna in sleep. That little girl speaks leadership, black girl magic, and being seen. There were many dynamics of this piece that I loved. The gentrified structure that encompassed all the figures in the photo, as the family themselves showed being present in these changing times.
